Just before Evelyn May past away, she was asked to write her life history. She didn't get too far on the project, but this is what she had to say...
Childhood Memories of Evelyn Johnston
I was born in Spokane, Washington, April 1, 1911, the child of Edward Franklin Carryer and Nettie Grace Bevens. When I was still a baby my parents moved to Montana near the Flathead Indian Reservation where my father sold sewing machines, many of them to the Indians. Some of the Indians had never seen a white baby before and they were very curious, coming up to my mother when she carried me into town and peering under my blankets exclaiming with wonder to each other. One of my earliest memories took place during our stay in this same place. While playing out of doors I wandered behind the wood shed so that when my mother came to the door to call me she could not see me. She stood by the back door calling my name, but for some reason I did not answer. An Indian man was walking across the field and I was watching him. Becoming impatient that I did not respond to her calls, my mother said, "You better come here, Evelyn, or that Indian will get you!" I was so frightened that I could not move or speak. I was literally paralysed. Finally my mother came around the end of the woodshed and carried me into the house. Later, when I was around 3 years old, my mother and father separated. My father was in jail and my mother took my brother, Charles Edward, and me to see him because we were going to Detroit. It was a small square room divided by a wall of bars. When he told me "good-bye" he gave me a peach. It was so large that when he squeezed it through the bars the skin was pulled back and the juice leaked out. That was the last time I saw my father for over 4 years. We went to Detroit by train. I can remember my brother, Charles, sitting on my mother's lap and chewing on a pendant watch that hung around her neck on a double chain. He bit on the watch so hard he made tiny dents in the case. When we arrived in Detroit we stayed with my mother's sister, Linnie, and her husband, George Robinson, who ran a grocery store. They had two children, Donald and Gladys. My aunt took care of us while my mother worked. Her other sister, Gladys, stayed there too and she also worked. When my brother, Charles, was 22 months and 22 days old he died of bronchial pneumonia. He was in his coffin at home. Someone held me up so I could kiss his cheek. It was very cold. He appeared to be sleeping. Later, my mother and I went to German Township, near Springfield, Ohio, to visit my father's family. My grandmother, Anna Carryer's, birthday was the same as mine, April 1st. She was a tall woman, rather heavy, very upright in carriage, with coal black hair in a large coronet on top of her head. My grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Carryer, was tall, slender, rather stooped, with a drooping mustache. He was very stern, did not smile much, and believed that "all children should be seen but not heard." There was no childish chatter at the table during meals. They had a truck farm where they raised vegetables, melons, fruit, chickens, eggs, milk and butter. Grandpa took the produce to the market. On Sundays all my uncles and aunts came for dinner. We would have chicken and noodles (home grown and made) with homemade ice cream and melons or fruit in season. I started to school in a little country schoolhouse where my father had started to school, and my teacher was a son of my father's first teacher. It was a one-room school and had classes from 1 through 8. My grandparents were raising Mavin, a relative's daughter. She was about 2 years older than I was. We walked back and forth to school each day - about 2 miles each way. My grandmother was ill and my mother cared for her until she recovered. Then my mother nursed other people in the neighbourhood who needed help. One of the local afflictions affecting infants was called "short-growth". This was manifested by a loss of weight, fussiness and lassitude. A "cure" was administered by a seventh son of a seventh son. He would take a piece of string and measure the length of the baby. Then, making a circle of the string, he would pass it from the bay's feet up the body and over its head. This was thought to check the condition. Great care was exercised in this procedure as it was believed that to pass the string from the head down the body and over the feet would hasten the progress of the disease. My mother's approach was somewhat different. She made up a formula of Eagle Brand condensed milk with warm water and was able to "save" a number of undernourished infants. She gained a reputation as a midwife and was kept busy. The wages were very low - sometimes nonexistent - but she never refused a call from a sick neighbour. My grandparents owned a young buggy mare named Bessie who was afraid to cross a bridge. Whenever we came to a bridge whoever was driving the buggy would have to get down and lead her across the bridge. She would resist at first, holding back so you had to really pull on the reins to get her moving. Then, when halfway across, she would run the rest of the way and you would be forced to hold back as best you could, shouting "whoa! whoa!" My grandmother's birthday was the same day as mine. I can especially remember my 6th birthday. We celebrated together. My uncles, John, Jim and Ben, rigged up a washing machine. It was activated by a gas engine and was located under a "katabey" tree in the back yard. It snowed during the night so the boys had to shovel a path to the contraption. When I walked down the path to see the new washing machine I could not see over the snow. This was a freak snowstorm and the snow soon melted. My grandmother was afraid of the new machine and one of the boys had to run the engine whenever she washed the clothes. My mother and I went back to Detroit and stayed with the Robinson's again. I remember participating, along with thousands of school children, in a parade. I was dressed as a nurse. There were thousands of soldiers and sailors in the parade, and cannons also. People stood along the sidewalks and cheered. We lived near a fire station. When my cousins and I heard the fire bell ring we would dash to the corner so we could watch the horses come galloping out of the firehouse pulling the bright red engines. The horses were so beautiful, so intelligent and so well trained they knew exactly what to do. It was a very thrilling and exciting spectacle and we never tired of watching it. My aunt Linnie gave birth to Cerese and my mother took care of them. When the baby was still very small there was a diphtheria epidemic and both my mother and I contacted it, although no one else in the family did. Thousands of people died. Antitoxin was still in an experimental stage and we were among the first ones to receive vaccinations. Many people refused the shots. They were more afraid of the vaccination than the disease.
When my mother and I arrived at the hospital we were separated and I was put in a sort of a crib with high sides so I could not get out. I was very frightened and cried a lot. The nurses were so busy they did not pay any attention to me so when I needed to use the bedpan no one came. I had a terrible accident. When the nurse discovered what had happened she was very angry and told me that if I did it again she would put me in with the pigs. The only pigs I knew about were the half-wild razorback hogs that I had been warned about in Ohio. I had been told not to put my fingers through the fence or climb on it so me toes were between the logs, or to fall in the pen because they were viscous and would bite and possibly kill a small child. The nurse's threat frightened me more than ever and I continued to cry so they finally moved me into the ward with my mother and I calmed down.
We had both been very ill, but the day finally arrived when we could go home. I remember sitting on the high hospital bed while my mother dressed me. I felt fine as long as I was sitting on the bed, but when I slid down to the floor my knees buckled and would not hold me upright. That was the last major epidemic of diphtheria in this country.
