A little history copied from the COTE Ancestry.
When Jean Charles and our fifth generation took to marriage and raising a family, Quebec was officially under the control of the British Commonwealth, but in reality, not much had changed from the generation before. In 1788, the church at Ste-Antoine de Tilly burned down and a new one was built. In 1791, the Constitutional Act separated Quebec into Upper (Ontario) and Lower (Quebec). Also in that year Jean Charles married Pelagie Croteau, daughter of Louis Francois and Felicite Chaine. There were three children:

Emile J. Croteau, 64 of 12 Fairfield Ave., died today at the Woonsocket Health Center, Poplar St., after a long illness.
He was the husband of Marie Therese (Bergeron) Croteau. Born Oct 22, 1911 in Woonsocket, a son of the late Archilles and Marie-Louise (Paul) Croteau, he was a lifelong city resident.
Mr. Croteau has been associated with Frank Kerns Auto Supply Inc. as a salesman for 32 years before retiring in 1973. He also was past president of the former Deluxe Sportsman's Club.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Richard A., of Woonsocket; a brother, Wifred of North Smithfield; a sister, Mrs. Ema Vanella of Johnston, and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9:00 AM, from the Fournier Funeral Home, 463 South Main St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Agatha's Church.
Burial will be in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham, RI.
