Descendants of Finlay McArthur
Generation No. 1
1. FINLAY3 MCARTHUR (JOHN2, FINLAY1) was born 1792 in Probably Kilmeny, Islay, Argyllshire, Scotland, and died March 29, 1880 in Collingwood, Grey County, Ontario. He married MARJORY MCKINNON Bef. 1820 in Scotland.
Notes for FINLAY MCARTHUR: The birth records for the Parish of Kilmeny, where Finlay's younger brothers' and sister's baptismal records have been located, are unreadable and incomplete for the year in which his headstone indicates he was born. Finlay was born in Scotland, married Marjory McKinnon from Mull, and bore several children in Islay and Mull, Argyll. In about 1849 ( based on obituaries of children of the orginal immigrant group) he and his wife and some of their children, emigrated to Ontario in company with two of his brothers and their families. They are documented as being settled in Collingwood, Ontario in the 1851 Ontario census.
One of the earliest settlements in the area was the "Sixth Line Community" (referring to the numbers of the land concessions). The McArthur brothers were of the earliest pioneers, if not the first, to clear and register their land. (this information came from Betty Ann Pearen, Collingwood resident and McArthur descendant.) At the time when they settled there, there were no churches, schools, mills, stores, or shops. Finlay and his wife Marjory, as well as daughter Isabel, son Hugh, and others, are buried at the Old Church at Banks, Blue Mountain, Collingwood, Ontario. Death date was obtained from McArthur descendant Pearce Carefoote.

Provided the same is not sold in my lifetime. I also give the said Peter McArthur __dollar and whatever of my personal property may remain after paying my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses and the several amounts aforementioned, hereby making it incumbent upon my said son, Peter McArthur, to pay to his sister Isabella McArthur, my eldest daughter, the sum of twenty dollars yearly each and every year during her Iifetime on the first day of January and also to board and lodge his sister, the said Isabella McArthur, in a reasonably comfortable manner while she remains unmarried and further it shall also be encoumbered upon my said son Peter McArthur to take care of my beloved wife Margery McArthur as long as she lives, and constantly provide her with good, suitable and sufficient food, lodging and clothing and all other things necessary in sickness and in health.
Fourth. I give and devise to my grandchild Finlay McArthur, son of Peter McArthur, twenty-five acres of land being comprised of the southwest quarter of the west half of lot sixteen, in the sixth concession of the Township of Collingwood in the County of Grey, my son Peter to have the use and control of said parcel of land during his Iffe, provided the same is not sold in my lifetime.
Fifth. I give and devise to my grandchild John McArthur, son of Peter McArthur, twenty-five acres of land being comprised of the south east quarter of the west half lot number sixteen in the sixth concession of the said Township of Collingwood in the County of Grey. My son Peter McArthur to have the use and control of said parcel of land during his life, provided the same is not sold in my Iife time.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affixed my hand this twelfth day of July in the year of Our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and seventy four.
Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Finlay McArthur as and for his Last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in the presence of each other and at his request have subscribed our names as witnesses hereto.
Sigd. Henry Walter Farmer, Lot 15, 6th concession, Township of Collingwood. William White Farmer, Lot 17, 6th concession, Township of Collingwood

Notes for MARJORY MCKINNON: Marjorie appears in the 1851 Ontario census, with her age noted as 50 years, and in the 1861 census with her age noted as 63 years. Marjory, and her husband Findlay, as well as daughter Isabel, son Hugh, and others, are buried at the Old Church at Banks, Blue Mountain, Collingwood, Ontario.
Children of FINLAY MCARTHUR and MARJORY MCKINNON are:
i. JOHN K. MCARTHUR, b. August 27, 1820, Morven Parish, Islay, Scotland; d. August 20, 1871, Collingwood, Grey County, Ontario, Canada; m. MARY NEAGLE, 1851-1854, Probably Collingwood, Grey County, Ontario.
Notes for JOHN K. MCARTHUR: John's birth record in the Morvern Parish register reads "Morvern 27 August 1820 Finlaith MacArthur Resident in Ardtornish (or Ardlornish, Ardsornish) & Marjory McKinnon a L.(abbreviation for lawful) son John born---." He appears as the eldest offspring of Finlay and Marjorie McArthur in the 1851 Ontario census, where he is listed as a 28 year old son.
In the next census, in 1861, he appears as a 35 year old head of household, with his wife Mary, and his first four children (Peter, Margaret, C.(for Charles) and Richard), aged 6 to 2 years. In the 1871 census he is listed as 48 years of age, and heads a household made up of his wife and nine children aged 16 years to one month old.
According to oral family history, told to me by Marjory Read (and supported by a copy of a letter by John's cousin Peter McArthur, written 1882,) John and Mary and some of their children were on a buggy ride in that summer of 1871, when an electrical storm came up. They decided to find shelter and pulled off the road. When John came around the buggy and reached up to take baby Edward from her, he was struck by lightning and killed in front of their eyes. The extended McArthur family were good to the widowed Mary and her children. Family legend also holds that in the years after his death, whenever a thunderstorm raged, Mary would insist that her children drop to their knees and pray.
According to cemetery records of St. Mary's church in Collingwood where John is buried, he died on August 20, 1871 at the age of 50. He is buried there with his wife, Mary Neagle McArthur, sons Edward J., John, and daughter Marjorie. Also buried there is their 12 day old nameless child.
Notes for MARY NEAGLE: Nothing is known about the origins of Mary Neagle except that she was an immigrant to Ontario from Ireland. She was of the Roman Catholic faith, and her children were all baptized and raised in that tradition.
She bore ten children, and the youngest was just months old when her husband, John, was killed by lightning strike. At that time, Mary was in her mid to late thirties, and her older children were in their mid teens.
The course of events is not known, but by the early 1890s, members of the family were living in Butte, Montana. At some point in time, Mary joined them there. Her daughter Minnie was married to Arthur Dutcher in Butte in 1893. Charles Joseph was sheriff there in the middle 1890's. Her sons John and Edward died there, in mine explosions according to family stories, in 1895 and 1898 respectively.
She had lost other children as well. A baby died at the age of twelve days in 1868, and her daughter Marjorie died of tuberculosis at the age of 21 in 1894.
Charles Joseph moved to Greenwood, British Columbia in 1897, along with his wife Ella, his adopted stepson, Ted, and their two-year-old daughter, Marjorie. His mother Mary either made that move with them, or joined them there at some later time. She lived there until her death in 1907. Her death certificate (copy on file) indicates that she died of "La Grippe followed by Pneumonia," at the age of 74.
Her body was taken back to Collingwood, Ontario to the Roman Catholic cemetary where her husband and children had been buried.
ii. ISABELLA MCARTHUR, b. February 1822, Bowmore (Kilarrow) Parish, Islay, Argyll, Scotland.
Notes for ISABELLA MCARTHUR: Isabella appears in the Ontario censuses of 1851, 1861, 1871, and 1881. Her age is noted in these documents as 26, 30, 45, and 50, respectively. The 1881 listing identifies her as being in the household of her brother Peter's widow, and notes that she is also a widow. She is buried on Blue Mountain with her parents.
iii. ANN MCARTHUR, b. Abt. 1823, Argyll, Scotland; m. PETER SINCLAIR.
Notes for ANN MCARTHUR: Ann and Mary were twins. Ann and husband Peter had 8 children that lived to maturity, 5 girls and 3 boys.
iv. MARY MCARTHUR, b. Abt. 1823; m. JAMES SCOBIE.
Notes for MARY MCARTHUR: Ann and Mary were twins.
Notes for JAMES SCOBIE: Interred in the United Church Cemetery, Collingwood, Ontario. All information about James Scobie comes from his descendant Pearce Carefoote. Finlay's daughter, Mary, was wed to James Scobie who was bom in Lowland Scotland in the year 1820. It is not known when he came to Canada; the first legal record of him is a land sale from the period after his marriage. On November 18, 1858 he paid $600.00 to Mary's parents for fifty acres of land comprising the western half of the eastern half of Lot 16 in Concession 6, Collingwood Township. He sold the same lot on January 7, 1864 to one William Ross of Toronto.
Like the McArthurs, Scobie was a Presbyterian although the various census records indicate that he was not quite as conmiitted to the Kirk. Every decade, he is reported a member of another community - in 1851, a Presbyterian; in 1861 a Wesleyan Methodist; and in 1871 a Primitive Methodist. Despite his own theological wanderings, his wife and children remained true to the Presbyterian fold.
v. HUGH MCARTHUR, b. January 25, 1824, Islay, Argyllshire, Scotland; d. 1910, Banks, Near Collingwood, Ontario; m. ANN SMITH, March 25, 1851, Collingwood, Grey County, Ontario.
Notes for HUGH MCARTHUR: Hugh is a child of Findlay for whom I do not have copies of birth records on file. His inclusion in the family is based on the word of Eleanor Hawley, Hugh's last living grandchild, who says that Findlay was her great grandfather, and on the testimony of his cousin Peter's writings.
Hugh's children are also known to have farmed some of the land belonging originally to Findlay. This information was provided by Betty Ann Pearen, McArthur descendant and resident of Collingwood. (There is a question in my mind as to whether he and Eun might be the same individual. Aside from the similarity of their names, their birth dates are close and Hugh's birth date hasn't been solidly established; it differs in his obituary and on his gravestone.)
vi. EUN MCARTHUR, b. July 1826, Torosay Parish, Mull, Argyll, Scotland.
Notes for EUN MCARTHUR: The Torosay, Isle of Mull, Parish Records note Eun McArthur's baptism with the following entry, "July 16 1826, Finlay McArthur & Marjory McKinnon in Garmony, Eun." (the punctuation is my own addition.)
vii. CATHERINE MCARTHUR, b. August 1828, Torosay Parish, Mull, Argyll, Scotland; m. UNKNOWN MCGREGOR.
Notes for CATHERINE MCARTHUR: The Torosay, Isle of Mull, Parish Records note Catherine McArthur's baptism with the following entry, "September 1, 1828, Finlay McArthur & Marjory McKinnon, Garmony, Catherine." (the punctuation is my own addition.)
viii. CHARLES MCARTHUR, b. September 24, 1832, Torosay Parish, Mull, Argyll, Scotland.
Notes for CHARLES MCARTHUR: The Torosay, Isle of Mull, Parish Records note Charles and Peter McArthur's births and baptisms with the following entry, "Charles and Peter, lawful twin sons of Finlay McArthur and Marjory McKinnon at Garmony born on the 24th Sept. and baptized on the 9th of Oct. 1832." (the punctuation is my own addition.) With the inaccuracy common in the Ontario census reports, Charles' age in the 1851 census is noted as 17, and in the 1861 census it is noted as 25
ix. PETER MCARTHUR, b. September 24, 1832, Torosay Parish, Mull, Argyll, Scotland; d. 1879; m. ANN MCKENZIE, 1867, Simcoe County, Ontario.
Notes for PETER MCARTHUR: The Torosay, Isle of Mull, Parish Records note Charles and Peter McArthur's births and baptisms with the following entry, "Charles and Peter, lawful twin sons of Finlay McArthur and Marjory McKinnon at Garmony born on the 24th Sept. and baptized on the 9th of Oct. 1832." (the punctuation is my own addition.) Ontario census records show Peter as 17 years old in 1851, and 25 years old in 1861.
Notes for ANN MCKENZIE: Ann is listed as a 35 year old widow in the 1881 Ontario census. Her sister in law, Isabella, is listed as a member of her household at that time, and also widowed.
x. NEIL MCARTHUR, b. October 07, 1834, Torosay Parish, Mull, Argyll, Scotland; d. Abt. 1872, Collingwood, Grey County, Ontario; m. CATHERINE MCARTHUR, January 08, 1858, Collingwood, Grey County, Ontario.
Notes for NEIL MCARTHUR: The Torosay, Isle of Mull, Parish Records note Neil McArthur's birth and baptism with the following entry, "Neil, lawful son of Finlay McArthur and Marjory McKinnon at Garmony born on the 7th and baptized on the 22nd of Oct. 1834." (the punctuation is my own addition.) His cousin Peter's letter said that Neil was a wagon maker in Collingwood who died about 1872.
Notes for CATHERINE MCARTHUR: Catherine is listed as two years old in the 1841 Scottish census for the parish of Bowmore. She also appears in the Ontario census of 1851. Her age is noted in this document as 10 years old.
