This is a strange family to research - one source indicated that two children were born in New Hampshire, but I'm unable to find them in any census or birth records. I suspect the truth will come out in the 1921 Canadian Census in the year 2011.

Obituary of Paul Crotteau in Wed, Sept. 9, 1936 Rice Lake Chronotype (Rice Lake, Barron County, WI) Paul Crotteau

Paul Crotteau, better known as "Joe," was born in Canada on January 17, 1873, and died in a Minneapolis hospital last Friday, of heart trouble. Mr. Crotteau moved to this country 52 years ago, settling on a farm east of this city with his parents.

He lived in this vicinity until 25 years ago, when he moved to Cloquet, Minn., where he engaged in farming. Recently he discontinued farming for employment in a paper mill located at St. Cloud. The funeral was held from the Catholic church in Cloquet Monday, with a large concourse of relatives and friends present to pay final tribute.

He is preceded in death by one brother and two sisters; surviving are his wife, eight sons, three daughters, five brothers, and three sisters.

Those from here who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Mike DeMars and family, Mrs. Henry Crotteau, Mr. and Mrs. Art Ryan, Mr. and Mrs. Edward DeMars, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis DeMars.

NOTE: I have some concerns about this Joseph Napoleon Crotteau born to Francois and Georgina Paradis. It seems he has recorded his place of birth as Wisconsin, USA in the 1920 & 1930 Census - instead of Canada.

Notice on the Draft Card - he claims citizenship due to his father's naturalization in the USA. He WAS born in Canada but can now claim he was born in the USA.

1910 Cloquet, MN, USA Census has a listing for Joseph Crotteau born 1875, and his wife is listed as Mary born 1892 with one child named Joseph Jr. born 1909. The Census indicated that Mary only had 1 child before 1910. If this is the correct couple, then why isn't Elmer born 1904 listed? Elmer would have been 6 years old at the time. Joseph and Mary are very common names among the French. This census indicated that Joseph has been married three times.
