Double Tragedy Strikes Family Here Saturday
A four year old girl was the victim of a tractor mishap Saturday afternoon in rural Rice Lake, and a double note of tragedy in the family was struck later the same afternoon when her grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack here.
Julie Ann Saffert, 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Saffert of Rt. 4 was riding a tractor with her father to haul a load of manure to the fields when she fell from the seat and a wheel of the machine passed over her. She died a few hours later at Lakeside hospital in Rice Lake.
Victim of a heart attack was Henry Crotteau, 85, of 209 W. Marshall st., Rice Lake.
Joint funeral services for the child and her grandfather were held Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church in the city. Rev. James Dabruzzi officiated, and burial was in the church cemetery.
Julie Ann was born Oct. 16, 1967 in Rice Lake. She is survived by her parents, her grandmother, Elsa Crotteau; four sisters, Janet Wuethrich, Ella Mae, Marlene and Lynette, all of Rice Lake; and six brothers, Daniel, Stephen, Kevin, Bernard and Edward, all at home, and Larry of Bloomer.
Mr. Crotteau was born in Rice Lake, Feb. 9, 1887, the son of a pioneer family in the area. He farmed in the town of Rice Lake until retirement about 20 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eliza Demers; five sons, Lloyd, Ray and Robert of Rice Lake, Norman of Kasper, Wyo. and Henry, jr. of New Brighton, Minn.; and five daughters, Lucille Saffert, Bernice Saffert and Cecilia Heldstab of Rice Lake, Edna Demers of Anaheim, Calif. and Mary Jane McGarvey of Waupaca. There are 55 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Saffert, Thomas E.
Thomas E. Saffert, age 55, of Rice Lake, WI, died Wednesday, September 12, 2007, at his home after a short battle with cancer. He was born to Louis and Lucille (Crotteau) Saffert on October 23, 1951, in Rice Lake. On September 21, 1974, he was married to Pamela Spielbauer at St. John's Catholic Church in Menasha, WI. They then moved to Medford, WI, where he was employed by Thorp Finance until 1976 when they moved to Rice Lake where he continued his banking career. Tom was named President of Firstar Bank in 1990 continuing in that role during the transition to US Bank and until the present time.
Tom Saffert is survived by his wife, Pamela Saffert, of Rice Lake, WI three sons a granddaughter and a sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2007, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake, WI, with Fr. James Powers officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals and for 1 hour prior to the funeral at the Church.

DOVER-M. Jeanine Salvas, 62, of Auburn, Alabama, died Sunday, July 03, 2005, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Dover, N.H., the daughter of Albert and Irene (Ouellette) Salvas. She lived in Dover for a period of time before moving to Florida and then to Auburn, Alabama, where she had resided for the past 8 years. While living in Auburn, Alabama, she was a communicant of St. Michaels Church and a member of the Schola Choir at the church. She was also part of the Civic Corral Choir.
Although she loved singing, classical music and the beach, her grandchildren were her life. She loved them very deeply.
