William R. Ross - Bottineau - December 1903
Willie Ross was an expert on horses, a life-long horse trader and handler. He was also an accomplished horse thief. So, when he went to the Willow City area to steal a fine band of horses from Thomas Walsh, an elderly farmer, on July 5, 1902, he made off with the horses after shooting the sleeping Walsh to death through a screen door. Local authorities focused on Ross from the beginning and under questioning he soon admitted his guilt. Brought to trial at Bottineau in August, he was convicted and sentenced to hang on December 5th. Events leading up to the execution at Bottineau were moving smoothly until the day before when Ross suddenly confessed to involvement in a second murder. In November 1901, Ross related, he and a young Minot man, Carl Hanson were working on a ranch near Delta (present-day Blaisdell) when they met Napoleon LeMay, camped overnight with several horses which they admired. When LeMay refused to trade the animals, Hanson ended by matter by simply shooting him in the back. The body was concealed in a nearby dry well. This sensation was enough to stay Ross' execution for long enough to investigate. Hanson was located near Williston and though he denied complicity Ross' testimony was sufficient to obtain his conviction for murder. Ross' execution was rescheduled for early on March 6th, on an enclosed gallows set up alongside the Bottineau County courthouse. In his last days Ross converted to Catholicism and went to his death without a murmur.

Research Notes: Wife - Ellen Turpin
LeMay Family Genealogy
http://lemayleooren.tripod.com/
Anpa Elku was her Indian name and it was later changed to Ellen Turpin she was the daughter of Tomah, chief of Mdewakanton sioux near Red Wing, she was a full blood Mdewakanton native.
Information received that Ellen was older than Napoleon, although the official records indicate otherwise. It is believe she was born around 1841 or so.
You must see this web site for additional details. Nancy LeMay has done a great job and put in an inordinate amount of time into the LeMay Family research. Well worth the look!

From Caitlin
My great grandmother was Felicia Lemay. I always assumed that she was the daughter of Victorine Lemay and Alphonse Moussette until I recently received an email from the granddaughter of Bruno. You might want to look at this. Let me know what you think needs to be changed. The children of Victorine and Ambrose are articulated by direct descendants so they may be right on the names and birth dates. It also states that Ambrose immigrated (the PDF file lists him as being born in Mendota...) Can you enlarge the copy of the marriage certificate that you have in your file to see what the date is. I want to clear this up if possible and set the record as straight as possible.
Here is the email contents:
Victorine was born April 17, 1846 in Lotbiniere, Quebec. She died May 4, 1911 in Tarsus Parish, Bottineau County North Dakota. She married Ambrose Moussette on 21 January 1877. He was born about 1836 in Canada. He died on April 8, 1915 in St. John, Rolette County, ND. He was the son Joseph Mousset and Domithilde Dupuis. Ambrose immigrated from Canada to the US in 1865.
They had 6 children.
That does not count Felicia, I hate to say. In the 1870 Dakota County census, she is listed as Felicite Lemay. 1865 census, only Victorine is listed under her father. Felicia is listed in the 1875 Town of Eagen MN census as Felicia Lemay age 8 under Michael and Mary Lemay. Victorine is there also at age 28.
We, (Frank's granddaughter and I) believe that she was probably not Ambrose's child, though he raised her as such. In the 1880 census she is a Moussette, age 13. There is no way to prove it probably. Someone said they heard that she was the illegitimate child of a doctor in the area. Her baptismal record from St. Peter's in Mendota states that she was illegitimate. Hate to break that to you, but that is how it is.
However, Ambrose could have been her father because she was born in 1866 -- he came in 1865 according to his declaration of intent and citizenship papers. My Mom loved Aunt Get (Felicia) and they went to ND to visit a couple times. Franks daughter's daughter Edren also says her Mom talked about Felicia visiting them in CA, so she was definitely part of the family. I'd like to count her too, but I just can't get past the discrepancies in dates.
