INDIAN Motorcycles:
It has been over forty years since the last Indian Chief motorcycle rolled out of the plant in Springfield, MA's Winchester Square neighbourhood. But the machine that helped put the city on the map isn't ready to be relegated to the annals of history.

Indian began with bicycles. The first popular bicycles were the ones with the big wheel in front, the so called high wheels. George Hendee was a champion amateur bicycle racer in the high wheels for three years. He entered 309 races and won 302 of them. The safety bicycles with two equal size wheels came on the scene in the 1890's and bicycle racing became popular to promote the sale of bicycles. Mr. Hendee ran a bicycle company in Springfield, MA and in the process, crossed paths with Mr. Hedstrom who was also a bicycle racer.
After George Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom decided to build a road-going model, it only took Mr. Hedstrom about 4 or 5 months to complete the first prototype. It was brought to Springfield on May 30, 1901 and it was demonstrated in the next couple of days before larger and larger crowds. It passed scrutiny very well, it started every time and ran very smoothly. It would run slowly which was a very important feature at the time for motorcycles. And it would speed up to the exhilarating heights of 30mph. So it was extremely successful at its debut.
The interesting thing to me about the 1901 original prototype Indian was that it was not a very large machine. It was not very large because it was exquisitely built and it was perfectly designed. Nothing was too big or too small anywhere in it- in terms of moving parts or in terms of the visible parts on the outside frame or fender or whatever. Other machines that had been built up until that time were pretty much large and clumsy devices. In comparison, the 1901 Indian prototype and the early production models were like Swiss watches. They were extremely well made and very well thought out. Really, the person that designed that, Mr. Hedstrom, was half engineer and half artist.

David A. Longbottom 1917 - 2009 NORTH ATTLEBORO \endash David A. Longbottom, 91, of Arnold Road died early Thursday morning, February 19, 2009 in his home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Marcy (Croto) Longbottom for nearly thirty years and husband of the late Muriel (Scholes) Longbottom.
Born April 19, 1917 in Pawtucket, RI, he was a son of the late Samuel and Agnes (Allan) Longbottom.
Mr. Longbottom lived much of his life in Pawtucket before moving to North Attleboro over 43 years ago.
He worked for various local auto body shops including Bezema Auto Body in Norwood for many years before retiring in 1980.
Mr. Longbottom was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served European Theatre and received many awards and medals for his brave service. As a dedicated veteran, he was an active supporter of local veterans and veteran's organizations. He attended every local event and service he was able to and had an emotional trip to the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. two years ago with other local veterans.
Mr. Longbottom was an extremely talented craftsman and loved repairing and building things. He was an avid woodworker who made much of the furniture in his home. He also loved airplanes. Before entering the US Army he served the Civil Air Defense Corps and later belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association. Mr. Longbottom also flew airplanes much of his life and built intricate models of them to display.
Mr. Longbottom loved motorcycles, boats and fancy cars, especially his beloved 1986 Crown Victoria. His fondest accomplishment was building the extensive layouts necessary to accommodate his love for model trains.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Richardson of Coventry, RI and Joyce Prescott of Norton; two step-children, Steven Parker of Albany, NH and Sandra (Parker) Savoie of Bridgewater; a sister, Ruth Galway of Texas; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was brother of the late Richard Longbottom.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, February 22 from 3-5 p.m. in the SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro. A funeral service will be held at the conclusion of visiting at 5 p.m. Burial with full military honors will be held privately at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Barrows Perpetual Care Fund, c/o North Attleboro Veterans Office, 43 South Washington Street, North Attleboro, MA 02760.
