ThunderBay Newspaper Coloumn Obituary:

Tangible evidence of the respect in which they were held in the two cities not only as citizens but men who gave their lives in devotion to their public duty; hundreds of citizens in all walks of life turned out yesterday afternon to pay final tribute to the late Assistant Fire Chief J A McEwen and fireman Thomas Ross at impressive funeral services.

Deputy chief McEwen and fireman Ross lost their lives as a result of a fire in the commercial block Victoria Ave which broke out Friday night. A volunteer fireman Private Gordon Cyolsky of the Algonquin regiment also lost his life as a result of the blaze. The funeral services were two of the largest held in the city in a long time.

Long before the hour of the public services at the churches throngs of citizens were on hand; all paying their respects to two men who gave their lives as servants of the public. Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friend. With these words Rev Elgin G Turnbull of Wesley United church paid fitting tribute to the late assistance fire chief McEwen whom he described as a man among the many men in public service....... is to risk their lives for the general safety of men.

The funeral of Deputy chief McEwen was held at 1;30 from the George E Blake funeral chapel A short family service was held with Rev Mr Turnbull and Rev Agnew H Johnston of St Andrew's Presbyterian church officiating. A Short Masonic service also was held in the chapel.

It was a fire in a restaurant everyone was able to get out before flames reached them. He was not detered in any way trying to get his men out of the burning building. McEwen joined the Fort William fire department when it was organized in 1910 after serving for some time as a volunteer firefighter while being employed in a West Fort William hotel. He was the first fireman in West Fort William opening and manning for several years the West Fort William fire hall. He had been at the Lakehead almost 40 years.

He is survived by his wife 2 sons Archie at Little Long Lac and William with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve at an east coast port 4 daughters Ida Mrs H Cliff 611 North Vickers Street Fort Wm; Mary a nurse at Little Long Lac; Doris at home and Marjorie at home In addition several brothers and sisters also survive in eastern Ontario. Mr McEwen's mother Mrs Alex McEwen died in Toronto 2 weeks ago Sunday Resting 200 South May Street Fort William.
