Methuen - The city plans to demolish an abandoned house on 172 Pelham Street and widen a section of the road to ease the mile-long backups faced by morning commuters waiting to turn onto Interstate 93.
Motorists who take Pelham Street to Interstate 93 south from West Methuen and Southern New Hampshire sometimes idle in single file for up to half an hour on weekday mornings before reaching the interstate's on-ramp.
But the city recently seized the house next to the on-ramp at 172 Pelham St. for failure to pay property taxes, and Mayor William M. Manzi III said he wants to raze the dilapidated, white-shingled home and add a second, right-turn-only lane for cars merging onto the interstate.
The seized house at 172 Pelham St. was owned by Gerard and Theresa Croteau, according to city records, but it has not been occupied for years. City officials also are negotiating to take part of the front yard of a second home at 174 Pelham St., where the extra lane would start. The property owner, who also owns Galloway's next door, is open to the deal, Manzi said. He could not be reached for comment.

Surviving are two sons, Raymond A. Croteau and wife Rena of Eliot, Maine, and Normand Croteau of Dover, N.H.; daughters Theresa A. Rynn and fiancι Brian Astbury of Eliot, Maine, and Anita Croteau of Kittery; grandchildren Adam J. Croteau, Julie A. Rynn and fiancι Robby Foster, Donna Gardner and husband Aaron, Gregory M. O'Brien (Croteau) and wife Melissa, Shawna M. Anderson and husband Bruce, and Crystal B. Rynn and fiancι Duncan Bigelow; great-grandson Dylan Phillip Anderson; sister Doris Dube; and brother Paul Croteau and wife Nancy.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Yvette T. Croteau; brothers Wilfred, Phillias and Roger; and sisters Germaine and Theodora.
At Phil's request, services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Care for the Croteau family has been entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
WE REMEMBER: Phil was born Sept. 13, 1928, in Berlin, N.H., the seventh child of Arthur and Marion Croteau. At the age of 7, he moved to Portsmouth, N.H., with his family. He would eventually take up residence in Eliot until his last move to Kittery.
Phil attended St. Patrick's School in Portsmouth, and worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the paint shop, and retired as a bridge crane operator. In November 1948 he married Yvette T. (Dubay) Croteau and together they began a family.
Phil enjoyed playing cards and board games, hunting, fishing, jewelry making, wood carving, drawing, playing his harmonica and camping at "Croteau's Paradise." Phil was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus council #140.

Mrs. Croteau was born April 29, 1929, in St. Leonard, New Brunswick, the daughter of the late Napoleon and Anna Dube, and lived there until the age of 6.
She is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, Phillip. R. Croteau; two sons, Raymond A. Croteau and his wife Rena, and Normand P. Croteau; two daughters, Theresa A. Rynn and Anita L. Croteau; her grandchildren, Adam J. Croteau, Julie A. Rynn, Donna M. Gardner, Crystal B. Rynn, Gregory M. Croteau and Shawna M. Anderson; a great-grandson, Dylan P. Anderson; and two brothers, Romeo Dube and his wife Rachel, and Joel and his wife Alphena.
She was predeceased by six brothers, Jean Paul, Fidele, Patrick, Gerard, Robert and Clairmont; two sisters, Lucille and Regina, and two great-grandchildren, Christopher B. Rynn and Alex M. Anderson.
WE REMEMBER: Yvette, along with her family, moved to Van Buren and lived there until she was 14, when they relocated to Portsmouth, N.H. She lived in Eliot and most recently settled in Kittery with the love of her life, Phillip R. Croteau, whom she married Nov. 27, 1948. Together they made a home there for the next 60 years.
At Yvette's request, services will be private at the convenience of the family.
