• Obituary, 26 Jul 2004 - Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada

RIZZO Samuel Anthony - After a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the family he loved, on Monday, July 26, 2004, Samuel Anthony Rizzo, in his 68th year, found peace, claiming his eternal place in Heaven beside God. Dearly beloved husband of Terry for 46 years.

A woman he cherished, respected and loved with every fibre of his being; dear father of Nick Susan, Rick Suzy, Kelly, Tracy Frank Uvanile, Michele Tim Fergus and Tina; adored and cherished grandfather of Danielle, Andrea and Nickolas Rizzo, Devon Rizzo, Taylor and Patrick Bates, Jaime, Michael and Bailey Uvanile, Brittany, T.J., Patrick and Ricky Fergus; loving brother of Grace Cincone, Mary Jimmy Crecholi, Nick Glayde and sister-in-law Angie Rizzo; predeceased by brother Charlie, and brother-in-law Chuck Cincone; admired uncle of many nieces and nephews.

To the Round Table Men at the Brantford Golf & Country Club, you were men Sam loved, respected and admired. To Dr. Cicoria, Dr. DaBreo, Dr. Pawliwec and the V. O. N. nurses, especially Tracy and Marilyn, you earned Sam's praise and appreciation.

Born December 27, 1936 (Should be 1938 apparently) in Hamilton, Ontario to a father whose occupation as a shoemaker fostered his love of shoes - along with his inherent entrepreneurial skills and magnetic personality, Sam became a well respected leader in the retail industry, opening his first store "Le Vogue" in October, 1958 on Colborne Street, Brantford which transformed, in partnership with his brother Nick to become "Belinda & Brother Shoes". A store which grew to become a chain of 85, until his retirement in 1986. "If a man's values, determined his worth, "He" would be priceless.

If courage reflected strength "He'd" be the strongest man alive. If integrity defined his character the "He" in question would be our father, Sam Rizzo. A fearless, loving individual who enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. A man who possessed a heart made of gold.

Throughout his life, he consistently lavished his wife and six children with all that was his to bestow. Be it guidance, as they chose their individual life path, or support when they faltered. A man whose outgoing nature and genuine goodness was purely visible to each and every person given the privilege of making his acquaintance, or the honour of being counted amongst his closest friends.

A man whose generosity is as legendary as his deep love and commitment to his wife Terry Rizzo. A man whose gentle manner rivaled his strong convictions ,whose soul reflected his goodness and whose heart belonged to each and every member of his family.

A man who lived his life on his terms, who never compromised his integrity for personal gain. Instead, going out of his way to help others, be they family or friend gain whatever edge they needed, so they too, could live a little easier. A man whose home became a gathering place; the local hotspot, for not only his friends but those of his children as they grew.

Eventually trickling down to include his grandchildren and their friends as well. A man whose table was always capable of expanding to feed one more. A man whose friends now span the continent, whose loss is deeply felt and whose memory will be forever etched in their minds. A man who leaves his family with the legacy of his love... the sincerity of his word... and the privilege of being counted as one of his descendants. An individual chosen far too early by God. Our father, Sam Rizzo.

Friends will be received at the DENNIS TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross Street, Brantford on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p. m. and Thursday 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p. m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Basil's Church, Brantford on Friday at 11 a. m. Entombment Our Lady of the Assumption Mausoleum, Holy Cross Cemetery.

Research Notes: Husband - Anthony Montecalmo

Something happened in Chicago, ILL USA that caused Anthony to move to Hamilton, Ont. Canada and raise his two young daughters, Norma & Dorothy with the help of his mother Lucia Chirico before 1930.

Anthony worked at Stelco steel plant in Hamilton, Ont. for years until his retirement. When Lucia died, he moved in to a basement apartment with Roger & Dorothy Croteau until his own death. He loved to play the fiddle and would practise all night.

1920 US Census for Chicago, ILL shows Anthony MONTEGNA, age 27, from Italy, working in a Candy Factory.

Research Notes: Wife - Pearl Shover

Some information & pictures are from Irene Anderson, Lowell, INDIANA.

Information from Dorothy Croteau (Daughter) that Pearl never did divorce Anthony Montcalm. George Wright was a good friend of Anthony at one time and Pearl ended up living common law with George. Whether this is true or not is unknown.

Santo and Mary Crisafulli of Rochester, NY did not have any children of their own. Mary Crisafulli's sister, Lucia Chirico (Maurice Montcalm mother) quickly arranged for the baby to be adopted by Santo Crisafulli in Rochester, NY.

The baby adopted the name Mary Crisafuli or Nicoletti and went on to lead a normal life but was never told of her adoption!! This story could be fact or fiction of one of the older ladies that I spoke to. It could be born from a jealousy at an early childhood.
