EXETER, NH \emdash Joanne G. Croteau, 70, of Exeter, formerly of Hampton, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, with loving family by her side.
She was born Nov. 1, 1941, in Newburyport, Mass., a daughter of the late Walter and Helen (Kyanka) Sturgis.
Joanne was raised in Hampton and was a member of the first graduating class of Winnacunnet High School in 1959. She had worked at King's Department Store of Portsmouth, Tilton Equipment of North Hampton, and most recently as a reservationist for Pan Am at Pease.
Joanne was very artistic and used her skills in creating greeting cards for her family and friends. She loved gardening, tending to her flowers, the beach, being outdoors and traveling. Above all else, Joanne was a great wife, mother and grandmother. She was a very outgoing and fun-loving person who easily made people smile. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
She shared more than 36 years of marriage with her husband, Norman E. Croteau of Exeter. She is also survived by her daughters, Tracy Hamilton and her husband, Tom, and Liane Scott and her husband, Ryan, all of Hampton; and her grandchildren, Kody Santiago, Brendin Hamilton and Sidney and Riley Scott.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Paul and Robert Sturgis.
SERVICES: Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, in the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in the funeral home. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be private. BERLIN - Norman E. Croteau, 82, of Western Avenue, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at the Cottage Hospital in Woodsville.
He was born in Berlin on Feb. 5, 1925, the son of Albert and Georgiana (Aubin) Croteau, and was a lifelong resident of the area.
He was a U.S. Army (Navy) veteran of World War II and had been employed by Brown Co. and James River Corp., retiring at 62.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, now known as Good Shepherd Parish, a life-member of the VFW Post No. 2520 Berlin, a life-member of the DAV Chapter 2, the American Legion Post No. 36 and a former member of the Elks Lodge.
He enjoyed playing cribbage, which he did daily at the VFW.
Members of his family include his wife Irene (Leveille) Croteau of Berlin; four sons, Francis Croteau of Berlin, Henry Croteau of Lovell, Maine, Richard Croteau of Tampa, Fla., and Michael Croteau of Bruce, Fla.; one daughter, Paullette Chagnon of Pittsfield; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Turmel of Concord; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Edmond; and one sister, Cecile.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home, 180 Hillside Ave., Berlin.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Research Notes: Wife - Octavie Croteau
The Croteau children were well known in the small community of St. John, North Dakota, USA. Octavie Croteau was probably the most famous of the family. She was the first telephone operator in the area, working in Mr. Martineau's General Store in St. John for many years. She married Elie Jalbert in St. John, ND in 1910 and moved north to Saskatchewan, Canada. She gave birth to 4 children and also raised a son of Elie's brother, Oscar. The couple left Saskatchewan and moved to Astoria, Oregon, USA. Elie passed away in 1943 and Octavie moved to Novato, California, USA where she died in 1978.
