Florence Dorothy Croteau Florence Dorothy (Tofil) Croteau passed away in her sleep Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Florence was born April 6, 1927, in Hartford, Conn. She lived in Florida first in Miami, and most recently Weston, for 53 years. She was married to, and is survived by her husband of 62 years, Marcel Alyre Croteau.
A viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday, July 1, at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn, Kendall Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. EDT Thursday, July 2 at St. Timothy Catholic Church in Miami.
Florence is also survived by her three sons, James Marcel Croteau (Theresa) of Tallahassee, Edmond Joseph Croteau (Clara) of Miami and Michael George Croteau (Lily) of Vero Beach.
She was preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters and is survived by her brother Richard Tofil of Clinton, Conn. She had seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a collection of over 300 stuffed bears.
Active in the several women's guilds, Florence also was a member of the Polish-American Club, Daughters of Isabella and the Elks and Moose lodges.
She and her husband supported building drives at St. Peter and Paul, St. Hugh, St. Raymond, St. Timothy and St. Katherine Drexel Catholic churches. Florence was known for her generous spirit and strong faith.
She will be greatly missed by all of her family and numerous friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Katherine Drexel Building Fund (2700 Glades Circle, Ste. 200, Weston, FL 33327) or Elder Care Services (2815 W. Tennessee St., Tallahassee, FL 32304.)

The first family (to Aldenville) came from West Springfield. Marcellin Croteau was a French-Canadian builder and carpenter. There is considerable evidence that Alden (owner of 699 acres) worked very hard to persuade the Croteau family to relocate in Chicopee. They purchased a parcel on Ferry Street, which is now called Grattan Street. A lot at the corner of Mary Street is the site of the first house built in Aldenville. The year was 1891.
The talented Croteau would sell real estate for Alden. He later opened his own real estate office, formed his own construction company and would eventually build more than 30 homes in Aldenville. Alden described his lots as being high above the flood level and far from the city's two large rivers. While this was good, it also meant that the places of employment in the mills of Chicopee and Holyoke were far away.
On Oct. 30, 1897, the approximately 100 French-Canadian families saw the completion of a house of worship on the corner of Grattan and Chapel streets. The land for the chapel had been donated by Edward S. Alden and the building was constructed by Marcel Croteau. On that day, the Most Rev. Bishop Thomas D. Beaven gave his solemn benediction to the structure, and on the very same day, 34 children were confirmed. The first infant baptized in the new chapel was Alfred Croteau, son of Marcellin and Marie Croteau.
