Retired master chef Jean Louis Croteau, 77, died of heart failure September 19 after an illness lasting two months.
He was born March 31, 1928 in Batiscan, Quebec, son of Arthur Croteau and the former Angelene Thiffault, and was raised and educated there.
He joined the Canadian Merchant Navy when he was just 16 and learned to cook under the cook on his first ship. Then he was based in Halifax, N.S., where he took more cooking courses. He served as cook on several more ships and by the age of 19 had been around the world twice.
At the end of the Second World War, he left the navy and joined Canadian National Railways, cooking in the dining cars for several years. Finally he came to Brockville's psychiatric hospital (BPH), took his master chef training and became master chef at BPH until his retirement 17 years ago.
He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and cooked for many legion functions over the years. He also enjoyed membership in the Diamond Jubilee Club's shuffleboard group and the Legion's seniors Thursday morning club. He identified with St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Brockville.
Mr. Croteau was predeceased by his first wife, Pierrette Brunelle, but is survived by his second, the former Nellie McShane, whom he married October 8, 1983 in Brockville.
Also surviving are five children, five stepchildren and 15 grandchildren. His children are Sylvia Shackles and husband Bob, Francine Nevay and husband Chuck, Gerald Croteau and friend Joann, Susan Brown and husband Craig and Anne Lyle and husband Warren.
His stepchildren are Julie Edwards and husband Hal, Mike Edwards and wife Alida, Leslie MacGregor and husband David, Jim Edwards, and Jeff Edwards and wife Susan.
Besides his first wife, he was predeceased by stepsons William and Kevin.
Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home, Brockville, where on September 22 the funeral was held, with Father Tim Harrison officiating. Cremation was arranged through the funeral home.
Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society were gratefully acknowledged by the family.
