General Notes: Husband - Harold Joseph Crotteau

The weekend of June 9, 2007 was a great weekend to honour our World War II veterans from all over the State of Minnesota. Two buses left the Perkins restaurant on 40th Ave West in Duluth on Saturday morning in route to the state capital in St Paul. On board were WWII veterans and their families from our area on their way to the dedication of the World War II Memorial in front of the capital building. Among those on the buses were some of our veterans from Cloquet.

Double Tragedy Strikes Family Here Saturday

A four year old girl was the victim of a tractor mishap Saturday afternoon in rural Rice Lake, and a double note of tragedy in the family was struck later the same afternoon when her grandfather died suddenly of a heart attack here.

Julie Ann Saffert, 4, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Saffert of Rt. 4 was riding a tractor with her father to haul a load of manure to the fields when she fell from the seat and a wheel of the machine passed over her. She died a few hours later at Lakeside hospital in Rice Lake.

Victim of a heart attack was Henry Crotteau, 85, of 209 W. Marshall st., Rice Lake.

Joint funeral services for the child and her grandfather were held Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church in the city. Rev. James Dabruzzi officiated, and burial was in the church cemetery.

Research Notes: Husband - Henry Jeffrey Crotteau

BIOGRAPHIES: Henry CROTTEAU, Rice Lake Township, Barron Co., WI

Submitted by: Vic Gulickson <vic@indy.net> 24 February 2004

Henry Crotteau, who is successfully developing and operating a farm in Section 25, Rice Lake Township, and is an excellent representative of the younger, progressive farmers of the county, was born in the township where he still resides, Feb. 9, 1887, son of Frank and Georgiana (Parise) Crotteau, natives of Canada, who came to Barron County in 1884, purchased 80 acres in Section 25, Rice Lake Township, of which only ten acres had been broken, and by hard work, cleared up the rest of the farm, erected a substantial home and other buildings, and there carried on general farming. The mother died in 1888, and in 1907 the father retired and moved to Rice Lake City, where he died in 1908.

Henry was reared to farm pursuits on the home farm and attended the district school. Upon attaining his majority he became a renter, and as such worked for several years. In 1914 he purchased his present farm. It was then wild, covered with brush and stumps. He cleared up the land, erected a good house and outbuildings, and is well on the road to success. Everything that he has he has achieved by hard labor, and by working early and late, and he deserves much credit for what he has achieved.

He was married April 20, 1909, to Eliza Demers, who is also a native of Rice Lake Township, born June 8, 1891, daughter of John B. and Louise (Theiren) Demers, natives of Canada, who came to Barron County in the early days and were among the first settlers of Rice Lake, where they farmed until their death, he dying in 1903 and she in 1910.

Mr. and Mrs. Crotteau have six sturdy children: Georgiana, born June 7, 1910; Lucille, born Jan. 22, 1912; Harvey, born Sept. 4, 1913; Lloyd, born Sept. 21, 1915; Norman, born Aug. 15, 1917; and, Edna, born March 28, 1920. The family faith is that of the Roman Catholic Church.

Research Notes: Husband - Israel Crotteau

Name: Israel Crotteau Age: 39 Estimated birth year: <1841> Birthplace: CANA Occupation: Farmer Relationship to head-of-household: Self Home in 1880: Rudolph, Wood, Wisconsin Marital status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Spouse's name: Exile Crotteau Father's birthplace: CANA Mother's birthplace: CANA

Research Notes: Wife - Exiladus Rheaume

Exildus Rheaume who married Israel Crotteau in Wisconsin on July 16, 1867, immigrated with at least her father and 2 sisters in 1847 to Wisconsin. The mother of Exildus most likely died prior to the 1850 census (June 1, 1850) either in Canada or Wisconsin.
The youngest child of Julius (or Julian, etc) and unknown (possibly a Juneau?) was born about 1847-1848 in Canada. It is confusing, since the name for the 3rd daughter is the same as the name for the 3rd daughter born to his 2nd wife. I need to research this further. The census records for Exildus later in life indicate that she immigrated to Wisconsin about 1847.

By 1860, Julius Rheaume was married to a Adelaide (unknown) and they had 6 children, born between 1856 and 1865 in Wisconsin, the last one in Rudolph, Wood County, Wisconsin. They were in Rudolph in 1870.

By 1880, Julius had died and his wife remarried a Prosper Morrow. Three of the Rheaume children were listed in the 1880 living with the family. I could not tell by the Morrow children listed, when they were married.

The Welch family moved from Wisconsin to Montana between 1906 and 1910. They followed Ramsey Crotteau who arrived in Libby in the spring of 1906 and organized a modern sawmill plant, known as Dawson Lumber Company.

This information was found in a book (Nuggets to Timber - Pioneer Days at Libby, Montana) published by the Libby Pioneer Society and the Libby Woman's Club in 1970 (no page #s listed), there is a reference to the sawmill company that Ramsey Crotteau was involved in Libby, Montana.

It states that in the spring of 1906 a number of capitalists from Merrill, Wisconsin landed in Libby with their families and began construction of a modern sawmill plant. This firm was organized as the DAWSON LUMBER COMPANY. The members of the original firm were: Dennis E Dawson, James Hurley, James E Leary, F.M. McBride and Jim McBride, Ramsey Crotteau and Lewis DeRosia.

The 1900 US Census displays Ramsey Crotteau lives only a few houses from his sister Lillie (Crotteau) Welch and her husband Charles.

The 1910 US Census provided son's James, Ernest and Vernon listed. The report was fuzzy so I couldn't tell the exact years of birth for these three boys. Seems Ramsey and his father Israel both had a son in 1889 and named them - Ernest CROTTEAU.

1900 Census indicated this couple had a female servant or nanny living with them which indicated he was born in Sep 1874

Obituary of John B. Crotteau in Jan. 20, 1916 Rice Lake Chronotype (Rice Lake, Barron Co., WI)

John Crotteau
John Crotteau of this city died Friday, Jan. 14, of blood poisoning, at the age of 48 years, 8 months and 6 days. Mr. Crotteau was struck in the lip by a flying chip while working at one of the Bekkedal camps near Couderay. The cut was not serious but he caught cold and it became infected. He walked to the station at Couderay to come to this city to have the wound treated, and the exertion caused the infection to spread beyond the point where it could be stayed.

Mr. Crotteau was born May 8, 1867, at Chinwick (sic), Quebec, and came to Rice Lake with his parents at the age of 6 years, and has lived here ever since. July 26, 1895 he was married to Olivine Gagner of this city. To this union five children were born, one of whom preceded him in death.

Mr. Crotteau was a steady, reliable workman. He was a member of the Rice Lake Volunteer Fire Department and also of the Beaver Lodge.

The funeral was held Monday morning at St. Joseph's church, Rev. Father Schmit officiating. He leaves to mourn his death, his widow and four children, Victoria, Alex, Lina and Harry, four brothers, two sisters, a number of more distant relatives and numerous friends.
