Denise V. (Fortin) Levesque Croteau, 71, passed away unexpectedly in the late afternoon hours of Thursday, October 12, 2006 at the Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin.
She was born in Berlin on January 12, 1935, the daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie (Riley) Fortin. She attended local schools, and was a 1952 graduate of Notre Dame High School.
Denise was married to Leo D. Levesque, and together they raised two children. Following his passing in 1968, she married Gerard I. Croteau. She was a longtime member of St. Kieran Church, now known as St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish. Denise was employed for many years at Granite State Rubber Co, and later worked in the Berlin IGA Foodliner as a clerk in the meat department.
After her retirement, Denise volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Shop. In her spare time, she was an avid knitter. Denise loved her family and her church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son, David Levesque of Berlin and his wife Helen; her stepson, Gerard Croteau and his wife Jane of Mexico, Me.; her daughter, Deborah Roy and her husband Ronald of Berlin and her step-daughter Sharline Simpson of Gorham. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Holmes of Gorham. Additionally, Denise leaves behind her grandchildren; Kaytlyn and Jamason Levesque, Danielle and Bronson Roy, Shelley and Jerry Simpson and Cliff and Derek Croteau as well as her two great-granddaughters Dominique and Shauna.
She was preceded in death by her parents as well as by her first husband, Leo D. Levesque in August of 1968, and by her second husband, Gerard I. Croteau on January 6, 1998. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Roger, David and Eugene Fortin and by a sister Juanita Sirois.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Anne Church of Good Shepherd Parish, 345 Pleasant Street, Berlin, NH, 03570.
Interment will immediately follow the services in St. Kieran Cemetery on Hutchins Street in Berlin.

Methuen - The city plans to demolish an abandoned house on 172 Pelham Street and widen a section of the road to ease the mile-long backups faced by morning commuters waiting to turn onto Interstate 93.
Motorists who take Pelham Street to Interstate 93 south from West Methuen and Southern New Hampshire sometimes idle in single file for up to half an hour on weekday mornings before reaching the interstate's on-ramp.
But the city recently seized the house next to the on-ramp at 172 Pelham St. for failure to pay property taxes, and Mayor William M. Manzi III said he wants to raze the dilapidated, white-shingled home and add a second, right-turn-only lane for cars merging onto the interstate.
The seized house at 172 Pelham St. was owned by Gerard and Theresa Croteau, according to city records, but it has not been occupied for years. City officials also are negotiating to take part of the front yard of a second home at 174 Pelham St., where the extra lane would start. The property owner, who also owns Galloway's next door, is open to the deal, Manzi said. He could not be reached for comment.
