ROLLINSFORD ; Joseph Edward Croteau, 85, of 3 Doherty Lane, died Tuesday April 1, 2008 at the Hyder Family Hospice House, Dover, N.H., after a period of declining health.
Edward was born on Dec. 28, 1922, in Berlin and was the son of William and Eva (Brunelle) Croteau. He was raised in Berlin and was educated in the Berlin School System. Edward had been a resident of Rollinsford since his early teen years.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Upon his return from the service he started a career with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which lasted for over 31 years. After retirement from the Navy Yard, Edward went on to work for the Strafford County Sheriff Department as a bailiff of the court. He worked for the county for 25 years.
Mr. Croteau was a member of the American Legion Post 47 of Rollinsford and was a communicant of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Ed enjoyed the outdoors; he loved to camp, fish and especially enjoyed hunting. Edward was also very fond of cards.
Edward leaves his wife of 62 years, Grace (Dionne) Croteau of Rollinsford; his three sons, Norman Croteau and his wife Joanne of Exeter, Dennis Croteau and his wife Jen of Freedom and Gary Croteau and his wife Patricia of Rollinsford.
Edward leaves his daughters, Jeanne Groth and her husband Herman of Strafford, Margaret Antozs and her husband Dennis of Barrington and Doreen Grenier and her husband Russell of Northwood. Eddie also leaves his 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He leaves his brothers, Albert Croteau of Rollinsford and David Croteau and Armand Croteau, both of Somersworth. He leaves his sisters, Doris Dionne and Delia Carr, both of Somersworth, Mrs. (Albert) Anita Landry of Rochester, Mrs. Roland (Beatrice) Landry of Somersworth and Florida and Mrs. Ronald (Florence) Shorey of Virginia Beach, Va.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Irene Cote and Pauline Pepin, and by his brothers, John, Alexander, Wilfred, Richard and Edgar.
Calling hours at Bernier Funeral Home 49 South St., Somersworth will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. American Legion Services will be conducted in the funeral home at 7 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Catholic Church, Rollinsford with the Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be at a later date in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, NH.

There is a pension application form in the name of Joseph Croteau from Missouri, USA on file. The date on the form appears to be 7 July 1892 or 1893.

I'm not positive that Joseph and Marie Croteau are his parents. I don't have documentary proof just yet.
The 1860 US Census documented this marriage of Joseph Croteau and Angelina in Missouri, USA. He is listed as a "Trader" which could mean he is the trader of animal pelt furs.
He is not listed in the 1870 Census - only his son is listed under Joseph Croteau. Angelina is found in the 1870 MO Census listed as living with BODER and his cleaning woman.
It is assumed they moved from Nebraska, USA to Missouri, USA before his death or departure from the family. I'm starting to suspect he might have been killed during the American Civil War. He seemed to vanish out of the picture around that period of time.

Angelique Croteau came to St. Louis, MO, USA in 1840 - not necessarily by herself.
The 1860 US Nebraska census reports show a Lewis DUFAINE age 17 born in Missouri, USA living with Joseph Croteau and Angelina also born in Missouri, USA. I wonder if he is a son of Angelina? She would have been aged 19 years when she would have given birth to him.
The 1880 US census indicated that Joseph and John were the son of Angelique BODER. It appears they have changed their last name from Croteau to Boder this time around. Future census reports them with the surname as Croteau .
Death certificate indicated her last name was ROY.

Henry Boder was born in Switzerland, September 6, 1805, and came to this country in 1834, and settled in Mount Eaton, Ohio, and remained there for six years, working at his trade as carpenter and bridge builder. He went to New Orleans for several months, then to St. Louis, Missouri, where he remained for four years, and then came to this city in 1844. He built two buildings among the first built, one log and one frame. In 1845, he returned to New Orleans and remained until September 1, 1847, when he returned, and since which time he has been actively engaged in building. He has, by his industry and economy, saved a competency for old age. He married Louisa Perring, of Ohio, in 1836. She died in 1854, leaving two sons, Henry and Lewis, who now are bankers and substantial business men in Troy, Kansas. In 1863, he married Ms. Angelique Croteau, who came to this city in 1840.
