Eleanor Phyllis (Majewski) Croteau, 73 years old, died on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the Tufts Medical Center, Boston of injuries she received from a fall she received at her home in late October.
Born in Worcester, daughter of the late Stanley and Katherine Majewski, she attended Worcester Public Schools and graduated from Commerce High School, Class of 1955. She worked after graduation as a payroll clerk for St. Pierre Chain in Worcester.
In 1959, she married her husband, Gerald Croteau, and made a home with him for the next 50 years in several communities: Van Buren, ME; Pembroke, MA; Northhampton, Marlborough, Manchester, NH and Taunton; as her husband worked as a teacher, principal and Superintendent of Schools in Pembroke NH and as the Superintendent of Schools in Taunton.
In raising four children, she was very active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H activities. She was an active volunteer in many organizations and worked part time as a nurse's aid, sewing instructor and sewing machine saleswoman, mostly she worked very hard being a helpmate to her husband in raising their children, sewing many clothes for family including ties for her husband; planting gardens and preserving the vegetables and fruits.
Later, "Grandma" or "Darling" as she was known by her grandchildren would sew Halloween costumes, christening and first communion dresses. Eleanor was always game for some adventure and was able to help her husband become a proficient sailor. For many years, they enjoyed their sailboat, "Lolly C", in Lake Winnipesaukee, and off the coast of Newport.
In 1978 she graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Nashua with an LPN degree and three years later she graduated from New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord, NH with an associate's degree in nursing, fulfilling a life long dream to become a nurse. Mrs. Croteau worked at several hospitals and nursing homes including Elliott Hospital in Manchester, NH; Morton Hospital and New England Sinai in Stoughton. For the last 15 years she was a nurse at the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Attleboro, where she was working until her accidental fall. She loved nursing and her patients.
Following her husband's retirement in 2002, they travelled widely across the US, Canada and Eastern and Western Europe. She loved shopping and bringing back many wonderful treasures so she could share memories with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Gerald A. Croteau, Jr. of Taunton; three sons, Robert W. Croteau of Taunton, Andre S. Croteau and his wife Kelly of Davenport, FL, Gerald A. Croteau, III and his wife Sarah of Kirkland, Washington and a daughter, Katherine A. Macone and her husband John of Amesbury, MA;
two sisters, Dorothy Kulig of Millbury, MA, Virginia Rusin and her husband Frank of Bayone, NJ and a brother, Martin Majewski and his wife Ruth of West Warwick, RI.
She is the proud grandmother of nine and the aunt of several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St Mary's Church, Taunton on Wednesday at 11AM.
