EAST MADISON -- Francis E. Croteau, 87, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, at Cedar Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Skowhegan.
He was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Bath, the eldest son of Francis and Phildora (Cote) Croteau. His first wife, Rita (Lavalle) Croteau, passed away June 17, 1997, after 56 years of marriage; his second wife, Rita (Sinclair) Croteau, passed away Jan. 10, 2006. He was a graduate of Skowhegan High School, class of 1937. He attended Burnett Business College in Boston, and returning to Skowhegan in 1939 he worked for Raymonds Clothing Store for nine years.
In 1945 he purchased the store in East Madison from Fred Burrill, running it for five years. He was a selectman for the town of Madison for one year. In 1950, with his family, he moved to California and enrolled in California Flyers School where he earned a license as an aviation electronics mechanic and worked for North American Aviation.
In 1954 he returned to Skowhegan and was employed by Central Maine Power Co. as a meter reader, then customer service, and then to meter supervisor, in Waterville, until he retired in 1981.
In 1955 he constructed his home on the north shore of Lake Wesserunset and was one of the first families to live year round on the lake. In 1962, along with his father, Francis Sr., and his brother, Vincent, they developed Abnaki Camping Center, which he operated for 17 years. During that time he served tenure as president of the Maine Camp Ground Owners Association. He was a charter member of the Skowhegan/ Madison Elks Lodge, and one of the organizers of the Abnaki Snow Riders Club. He maintained a 30-year membership in the Amateur Radio Club (License W1MQI).
He is survived by his eldest son, David and his wife, Pat, of California; his daughter, Judy and her husband, Thomas LaPointe, of Skowhegan; his son, Paul and his wife, Judi, of Madison; his stepchildren, Bruce Lavallee of Lewiston, Christine Magilen of Miami Beach, Fla., Lisa Tilly of Saco and James Lavallee of Lisbon; three granddaughters and two grandsons, four great-grandchildren, and nieces.
He was predeceased by a brother, Vincent, and a sister, Connie (Croteau) Greene.
There will be no visiting hours.A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Calvary Cemetery, North Avenue, Skowhegan.

MADISON - Rita Lavallee-Croteau, 78, of 84 Abnaki Road, Madison, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 10, [2006] at her residence, following a long illness.
She was born in Lewiston on April 28, 1927, the daughter of Vital and Evangeline (Fournier) St. Clair and had been a resident of this community for most of her life.
She was employed as a nurses aide at St. Mary's Hospital for many years, until her retirement. She was married to her first husband, George Lavallee who died on Nov. 6, 1990. She then married Francis Croteau.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church. She enjoyed reading, ceramics, watching movies and most of all spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Francis Croteau, of Madison; two daughters, Christine Magilen and her husband, Steven, of Miami Beach, Fla., and Lisa Tilley and her husband, Jay, of Saco; two sons, Bruce Lavallee and his wife, Lise, of Minot and Jim Lavallee and his wife, Nancy, of Lisbon; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ann M. (O'Brien) Croteau, 77, of Charlton, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Monday, May 9, 2011.
She leaves her loving husband of 46 years, Francis R. Croteau; her children, Scott Croteau and his wife Missy of Palmer; Barbara McMahon and her husband Brian of Rutland; Brian Croteau and his wife Angel of Galion, OH; her sister Maureen Daignault and her husband Paul of Auburn; grandchildren, Amanda, Davey, Emily, Shannon and Kate, and a niece Kathleen Chaban.
Ann was born in Worcester the daughter of the late David and Anne (Holden) O'Brien and graduated from St. Stephen's High School. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Auburn.
She enjoyed her many years of employment with Halmark in Wisconsin. Some of her favorite activities included candlepin bowling, playing Bingo, swimming in her pool and riding the waves at the beach. Her most cherished time was spent with her grandchildren.
Ann's family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Summit Elder Care and her PCAs who took such wonderful care of Ann and allowed the family to care for her in the family home.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 5-8 PM Thursday, May 12, 2011 in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn. Her funeral will be held from the funeral home on Friday, May 13, 2011 with a Mass at 10 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St. North, Auburn. Burial will follow in St. Roch's Cemetery, Oxford.

Throughout all the research I have done, there appears to be some discrepancy between what I'm finding and what current family relatives are telling me. I believe that Antoinette Marie RILEY was born as Marie Antoinia SAS, Germany in accordance with what is recorded in the 1910 US Census. It is my opinion that the SAS family changed their name to RILEY to avoid persecution by the state for being German whilst they are at war with Germany.

The Township of Himsworth was surveyed in 1876-78 by Charles J. Chapman. By the 1890s, settlement had reached numbers that accommodated a division at Con 18 creating North and South Himsworth, Ontario. In 1962, the South Himsworth Central School was opened and the rural schools were closed and students bused to school.
