Although Miller's book is about Boston, he cites a couple of instances in which it is obvious the Watch and Ward Society's influence was often felt in Worcester. Bookshops in Boston suburbs and in cities such as Worcester and Springfield "tended to follow Boston's lead (in selling or removing books)."
The work could also be dangerous. Its secretary, Louis Croteau, died in 1948 at the age of 44 after being beaten by gangsters. "Croteau had made a lot of enemies over the course of his 20-year service to the Watch and Ward, particularly because of his crusades against gambling," Miller writes.

CROTEAU, Roland - Passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Wednesday February 16, 2005 at the age of 76. Dear husband of Irene.
Loving father of Colette Croteau, Suzanne Dave Brideau, Roland Lisa Croteau, Bernadette Croteau Dave McMillan and Ronald Croteau and his late wife Julie 2004.
Cherished grandfather of Michel Terra, Meridy, Byron, Malissa, Jasmine, Matthew, Ashley, Brittany, Briana, Halley, Celine, Braylyn, Aaron, Brock and Nikki and great-grandfather of Austin. Sadly missed by many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and step-children.
Predeceased by his first wife Euniece 1994.
Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to call at the Patterson Funeral Home, 6062 Main St. visiting Thursday 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. In memory of Mr. Croteau donations to his grandchildren, Halley and Aaron's Education Fund, would be appreciated by his family.
