The campaign on New Guinea is all but forgotten except by those who served there. Battles with names like Tarawa, Saipan, and Iwo Jima overshadow it. Yet Allied operations in New Guinea were essential to the U.S. Navy's drive across the Central Pacific and to the U.S. Army's liberation of the Philippine Islands from Japanese occupation. The remorseless Allied advance along the northern New Guinea coastline toward the Philippines forced the Japanese to divert precious ships, planes, and men who might otherwise have reinforced their crumbling Central Pacific front.
Pacific Area had expanded dramatically. From two infantry divisions, the 32d and 41st, in December 1942, the American contingent numbered five divisions (1st Cavalry, 6th, 24th, 32d, and 41st) by 31 January 1944. MacArthur also had three regimental combat teams (formed by attaching a field artillery battalion to the 503d Parachute Infantry, 112th Cavalry, and 158th Infantry Regiments), three engineer special brigades, and five Australian infantry divisions. Three more U.S. infantry divisions--the 31st, 33d, and 43d--were on the way. A combination of organized mosquito control, scientific treatment, and improved malaria discipline drummed into the GI's during training decreased outbreaks of the epidemic six fold and thus improved combat effectiveness.

Croteau, Edward Noel - Obituary
The funeral of Edward Noel Croteau who died on September 7 (1959) was held on the following Wednesday afternoon, September 9 (1959) in Centenary United Church, Stanstead (Quebec).
Rev. A.M. Rose, past of the church officiated. Mrs. A.P. Gordon at the organ played appropriate selections.
The bearers were Robert Croteau, Roy Gagne, Denis Cabana and Leslie Lackey, all grandsons, and James Cook and Denis Spalding, nephews.
The internment took place in the family plot at Chrystal Lake cemetery. (Crystal Lake Cemetery Stanstead, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada)
Croteau, Edward N., b. 1878, d. 1959, s/w Gertrude Spalding
Born at Warwick on August 6, 1878, Edward Noel was the son of Paul and Victoria (Sevigny) Croteau. He received his education at Warwick, Victoriaville and Danville schools.
On 16 April 1901 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Spalding of Martinsville and they stayed on the Spalding homestead there for about four years. Leaving there they resided in Cleveland Mills, Waterville, for about 13 years.
In 1918 they moved to Sherbrook where Mr. Croteau was employed by the Imperial Oil Co. until 1929 when they moved to Martinville, Quebec. There he purchased a farm which he operated until he retired in 1945 and then bought a house in Barnson, coming to Rock Island, Quebec in 1953.
Mrs. Croteau died on September 12, 1957. Shortly after her death, Mr. Croteau's health began to fail and a week before his death he entered the Orleans County Memorial Hospital, New Port, where he died.
Mr. Croteau was a former member of the Independent order of Foresters, and of the Grand Trunk Lodge and Insurance, having been employed by the Rail road a few years.
He is survived by his children, Edward and Wilfred, Montreal, Quebec; Mrs. Andrew (Lillian) Jennings, Spring Road, Lennoxville, Quebec; Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Gage, Bedford and Mrs. Clement (Mary) Cabana, Providence Rhode Island.
Another daughter, Alice died in 1916 in her fifteenth year. (Note: There is no mention in the 1901 or 1911 census reports of an Alice Croteau)
There are 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a brother Mr. Archie Croteau of Millbury, MA, USA, a sister Mrs. M. Blouin, Lennoxville; two sisters in law, Miss Agnes Spalding who has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Croteau for many years, and Mrs. A.N. Cook, Waterloo; a brother in law, Mr. Ben Spalding, Waterloo, and an uncle Mr. Napoleaon Sevigny of Beebe and other more distant relatives.
