Obituary - Denis F. Croteau
POWASSAN: The funeral mass of Denis Francis Croteau was held on July 25th (2003) at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Powassan. Officiating the mass was Father Paul Hickey.
Denis passed away on July 21st at the North Bay General Hospital at the age of 72. Born on the Croteau farm in South Himsworth Township on February 1st, 1931, he was the fourth of six children of Norine (nee Hanrahan) and Francis Xavier Croteau.
He leaves his sister Irene (husband Joe) Armstrong of Welland and brother Peter (wife Pat) of North Bay. Denis was predeceased by his parents and sister Ethel Miller-Rich and brothers Stephen and Emmett. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Theresa Croteau of Deep River and Norma Croteau of Calgary.
While growing up, Denis attended #4 South Himsworth School. When his father died in 1942, the family moved into Powassan were he attended Powassan District High School until the age of 16.
Going to work for Stanley Lake Lumber, Denis eventually moved on to gain employment on the Highway 2 construction project through Ajax. Moving back north for a brief period, he worked on the crew installing hydro lines through Loring. In 1950 Denis went to Toronto to work in an office. It was here in the city that he would meet his future wife, Joyce Kirkham.
Joyce worked for the Royal Bank until the couple wed on April 11, 1953 at St. Clare's Catholic Church in Toronto. Moving to Powassan, the couple rented a series of homes until they built their own home on Bridge Street. It was here that Denis and Joyce spent 42 of their 50 years together, raising a family.
Left to mourn him are his daughters, Betty (husband Steven) Tennant of Barrie, Lynn (husband Blaine) Bell of Powassan and Ed (wife Jacqui) of Toronto. Denis also leaves his grandchildren, Jeff, Shaun, and Brent Tennant, Steven, Robert and Carrie Lynn Bell.
During his years in Powassan, Denis spent 35 years working at Whittaker's Garage, first for Les and then for Keith. The last ten years before retirement, Denis also did surveyor work in the Powassan area for Totten, Simms, Hubicki. As a volunteer firefighter, Denis was a member of the Powassan Fire Department for more than 35 years. He served eight years on the Powassan Cemetery Board and also as a volunteer ambulance/driver assistant.
A great lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed his annual hunting forays from the Giesler hunt camp. Fishing was another pastime Denis enjoyed. It didn't matter if it was summer or winter, on Lake Nipissing, or at his cottage on Lorimer Lake. Trout fishing was in Algonquin Park with Russ Tennant, Peter Purdon and Derb MacLachlan. Denis was also an avid curler and was a charter member of the Powassan Curling Club.
He played both in the mixed league with his wife Joyce, as well as in the men's league. As an active associate member of the Powassan Legion, he fully supported the Legion's activities and could often be seen working the bingos. Denis loved gaming and would visit Casino Rama on a regular basis. He also loved sports and was a big fan of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. He rarely missed a televised game, even while in intensive care.
A devote man, Denis was active in the Catholic Church. Spending time with his grandchildren was his greatest pleasure and he maintained his wonderful sense of humour throughout his illness.
Family say he was a favourite with the nursing staff at the hospital and his strength of character and determination in the face of his illness was an inspiration to all. Cremation followed the funeral mass with interment of ashes at the Powassan Union Cemetery.
