Carl E. Croteau, Sr. 1931 - 2010 SPRINGFIELD - Carl E. Croteau, Sr., 79, of Springfield, died on Thursday, November 11, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born in Springfield on January 27, 1931 a son of the late George A. and Helen M. (Walsh) Croteau and received his General Education Diploma from the Springfield School System and an Associate's Degree from Holyoke Community College.
Carl served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Private First Class. He received the Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars for his service. Carl was employed as the Chief House Specialist for the Hampden County Housing Court for 30 years and retired in 2006. Previously, he was employed as a machinist at the former American Bosch.
Carl was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Springfield, where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Church. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 160 Indian Orchard.
In addition to his parents, Carl was predeceased by two sons, Daniel T. Croteau and Michael F. Croteau; two brothers, Paul and Leslie Croteau; and two sisters, Theresa Dupre and Joyce Carney. Carl will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him including his wife of 59 years, Bernice "Bunny" (Everett) Croteau; his sons, Carl E. Croteau, Jr. and his wife Diane of Springfield, Gregory G. Croteau of Montague, and Joseph A. Croteau and his wife Lucy of East Longmeadow; his daughters, Jacqueline T. Fleury and her husband Patrick of West Springfield, and Catherine B. Powers and her husband Thomas of Springfield; his nine grandchildren and his seven great grandchildren.
Carl also leaves a brother, George Croteau and his wife Theresa of West Springfield; and his many nieces and nephews and extended family members and friends. Carl's family will receive friends on Monday November 15, 2010 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1023 Parker Street in Springfield. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday November 16, 2010 at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, with Rites of Committal, Army Military Honors and Interment to follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 985 Parker Street, both in Springfield. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Sampson's Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road in Springfield. Donations may be made in Carl's memory to Griffin's Friends in care of Baystate Health Foundation, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199.
