Alexander F. Croteau, 94, a longtime Upton resident, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at the Webster Manor Healthcare Center. His loving wife of 60 years, Irene (Robida) Croteau, died in 1999.
Mr. Croteau was born in Marlboro, NH, a son of the late Henry and Pamelia (Girouard) Croteau. He lived most of his life in Upton, where he was well known in the area for his beautiful gladiolus and perennial gardens.
He was an active member of the NORCO Gladiolus Society and propagated the first miniature green gladiolus in the area, which he named Irenes Green. He retired in 1979 from the Draper Division of Rockwell International in Hopedale and then spent more time in his beloved gardens.
Alex was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving stateside. He was an avid bowler and stamp collector, and a communicant of Holy Angels Parish. He leaves one son, Leo Croteau of Douglas; two daughters, Anne LaVergne of Waldoboro, ME and Louise Williams of Dudley; a sister, Dorothy Francks of South Grafton; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Robert, Louis, and Melvina Croteau, and Mabel Brodeur.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, from the Williams-Pedersen Funeral Home, 45 Main St., Upton, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Milford St., Upton.
Burial with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. A period of viewing in the funeral home will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the Mass on Wednesday. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Upton Ambulance Fund, Box 29, or to the Upton Police Association, Box 182, both Upton, MA 01568.

Alexander Louis Croteau, 75, of 100 Fourth Street, died October 18, 2001at his home after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Berlin on July 24, 1926 the son of William and Eva (Brunelle) Croteau, he attended schools in Berlin and had lived in Dover for most of his lifetime. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, maple sugaring and blueberry picking.
Prior to his retirement he was employed for more than 46 years at the Heidelburg Harris Co. (the former Kidder Press Co. and Moore Business Forms Co.) where he worked in the tooling and methods department, and was a member of the quarter century club.
He was an active member of St. Charles Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jeanne (Grenier) Croteau; six sons Daniel Croteau , Maurice Croteau and his wife Linda and Raymond Croteau and his wife Joyce all of Berwick, ME, Gerard Croteau and his wife Nancy of Dover, Ernest Croteau and his wife Doreen of East Lebanon, ME, Martin Croteau and his wife Judy of Rochester ; a daughter Gloria Hutchings and her husband Thomas of Jackson; five brothers Edward Croteau and his wife Grace, Albert "Minna" Croteau and his wife Linda and John Croteau and his wife Carol all of Rollinsford, Armand Croteau and his wife Alice and David Croteau and his wife Helen all of Somersworth.

Three brothers Wilfred Croteau, Richard Croteau, and Edgar Croteau and a sister Irene Cote predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, October 22, at St. Charles Church, officiated by The Reverend Paul Gregoire, pastor, as celebrant assisted by The Reverend Pete Murphy, Alex's cousin. Burial followed at St. Charles Cemetery.

There are TWO Francois Croteau's in this family. Note one is named Xavier the other is named Edouard. Do Not Confuse the two. I'm still working on who's children where born to which Francois.
Note:
The 1880 US Census gives Thomas Croteau born in 1844 not 20 Dec 1823. This is the correct family but he has a 22 year old daugher. I suspect the form should read 56 not 36 which would place his year of birth at 1824... ergo, I have the correct date of birth because they ask the question, "how old will you be on your next birthday?"
