Irene Cote
BIDDEFORD - Irene G. Cote, 77, formerly of Kossuth St., died Monday at Southridge Living Center after a long illness. Born in Berlin, N.H. Aug. 10, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Eva Brunelle Croteau and was educated in Berlin schools. On Aug. 4, 1941, she married Narcisse J. Cote. She came to this area in 1942.
Mrs. Cote was a homemaker and a member of St. Andre's Church, a member of the church choir, the Parents Friends Teachers Assoc., and volunteered for the hot lunch program there.
She was predeceased by her husband, Narcisse J. Cote, who died Dec. 17, 1966.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Priscilla) Guerin of Biddeford; six sons, Raymond Cote of Biddeford, Robert Cote of Biddeford, Paul Cote of Seoul, Korea, Donald Cote of Saco, Norman Cote of Biddeford, and David Cote of Saco; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Edward Croteau, Albert Croteau, John Croteau, all of Rollinsford, N.H., David Croteau, and Edgar Croteau, Armand Croteau, all of Somersworth, and Alexandre Croteau of Dover; six sisters, Delia Carr, Anita Landry, Pauline Pepin, all of Somersworth, Doris Dionne of Rollinsford, Beatrice Landry of Bonita Spring, Fla., Florence Shorey of Virginia Beach, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm Street, Biddeford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andre's Church, Biddeford. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

SKOWHEGAN -- Many people at the Skowhegan post office Wednesday had stories to tell about the late U.S. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, whose likeness now graces a postage stamp.
Some were "thrilled" that a woman they consider one of their own was so honoured; others recognized her contributions to the world and still others said they were related to Smith, who died in 1995.
Nancy Glover of East Madison was also pleased that Smith was chosen for the commemorative stamp. "I'm thrilled, because she dates back to my grandfather, Francis Croteau Sr., who was her cousin," Glover said.
Across the counter, postal clerk Josh Farrand grinned. Croteau was his great-grandfather. He said Croteau was a postmaster in Skowhegan and two other family members carried mail. Farrand was one of the people who helped stamp the special pictorial postmark at the First Day of Issue Ceremony at the library center last Wednesday. Hundreds of envelopes and stamps were sold at the event.
