** History of St. Bibiane Church, Richmond, Quebec, Canada Since 1824, missionaries comes to Richmond to celebrate the Mass and the Sacraments there, and to preach the Word of God there. People accommodated the priest in their hearth, and it is there that took place the religious offices. One believed good to build a small vault, the Ste-Bibiane vault, which was benite on May 28, 1829. It was located at Brand' S Hill, practically opposite the way which leads to Denison, close to the current farm which one sees on road 116. This first vault was useful until 1840 whereas a fire destroyed it completely.

One had already started to build another vault since 1838. One finished the construction of 50 feet by 34. And this second vault St-Bibiane was located on the ground of the current Ste-Bibiane church. The population grew and the vault did not meet the need any more. It is demolished, and one entrusted to MISTERS Cyrias and Alexandre Ouellette, architects and manufacturers of Kamouraska, the care to build the current Ste-Bibiane church of Richmond. Masonry was entrusted to Mr. Leon Decelles of Richmond.

December 2, 1880, the new church was benite by Mgr Antoine Racine, first bishop of Sherbrooke; and the first mass was celebrated there by Rev. Luc Trahan, first priest, in the presence of Mgr Laflèche, of Three-Rivers and Mgr Moreau, St-Hyacinthe. It is only on August 29 1890 which the parish is civilly set up canonically and. The following year, MISTERS Godbout and Paquet of St-Hyacinthe finished the interior decoration of the church, according to plans' of Mr. David Ouellette of Quebec. February 5, 1895, one installed the Way of the Cross, splendid fabrics probably painted by the Cabanet painter. When with the organ, they were built by the Casavant Brothers, of St-Hyacinthe and were installed in 1905.

In 1938, Mrg Philippe Desranleau detached 250 families of the Ste-Bibiane parish, and founded the parish Ste-Family of Richmond. January first, 2001, under the decision of Mgr Andre Gaumond, both parish were again amalgamated to form only the Ste-Bibiane parish of Richmond.

Debbie, we need to talk after 40 years.

General Notes: Child - Roger Louis Croteau

Official records display a date of birth as 9 Nov 1921, it should be 9 Dec 1921 instead.

Roger Croteau moved to Hamilton Ontario after WW II and his release from the army. He took up residency and worked for 25 years at the Dominion Foundries Steel Mill (DOFASCO).

He was an avid member of the Veterans Club. In his spare time he learned through mail correspondence, how to repair and maintain heavy equipment. He was very good at this with marks in the high 80's and 90's!

In 1975 he and Dorothy moved to Sturgeon Falls where he converted his "cottage" to a winter home. He loved the outdoors, the freedom of fishing when he wanted. He became the local handy man for others living around him.

Eventually his health started to deteriorate and he was hospitalized for various illness's until his death in 2003.

General Notes: Husband - Emile Novell Croteau

From Mike Croteau web site:
Anthime Croteau and his twin brother Emile were born on Christmas Day 1876, the children of Flavien and Zelia Croteau (nee Filteau). The next day the boys were baptized in St. Peter's Church in Mendota, MN, USA.

Message from Mike Croteau:
Sister Marie's father, Anthime, had a twin brother Emile. All but 1 of 7 of Emile's children went into religious service. Four daughters into the Presentation of Marie, one in Monasteries du Precieux Sang, St. Boniface and one son ordained a priest. Youngest son Theodore lived/died in Prince Albert SK.

Research Notes: Husband - Emile Novell Croteau

Emile Croteau followed in his father's footsteps and took an interest in his community. He often helped out at school and even rented out some of his land and a building for school use. Emile was voter No. 26 in the decision to incorporate the Village of St. John in 1903. He married Georgine Senecal and homesteaded in Baxter Township near St. John, ND. They moved to the Maryville Township near Thorne, ND to farm land he rented from the Sisters of Mercy. In 1913 the family moved north to Debden, Saskatchewan. Emile made his living farming and also custom sawing lumber. Emile died in 1938 at the age of 62 in Pesane, Saskatchewan and his widow Georgine died in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1982.
