He developed scarlet fever and was admitted to King George Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In April 1942 he returned to Shilo, Manitoba until November 1942. He was then transfered to the 9th Coast Battery in Vancouver and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. Due to his father being ill, he was allowed a release from the Army and returned home to work the farm.
